The ‘5 Count Craps Strategy’ was initially developed by Dr. Don Catlin, Professor Emeritus of Mathematics at the University of Massachusetts and was later given prominence by Frank Scoblete, a professional craps player.

Count

The 5-Count Strategy is used on random rollers at the craps table to ‘qualify the shooter’ to determine if you’re going to place any bets during his/her roll.

However, craps players usually leave such bets up until they are resolved. The question gambling writers must face is whether to count meaningless rolls as a push in calculating the house edge, or wait until the wager is resolved. After much thought, I have decided to express the house edge in craps three ways: Per bet made (counting pushes). In either case, this 2nd group hate it. The 3rd group consists of “craps agnostics.” (I’m firmly in the craps agnostic category, by the way.) Here’s how the 5-Count works: The purpose of the 5-Count is to locate shooters who are skilled at rolling the dice in such a way as to get an advantage over the casino.

The strategy is based on the studies that indicate that 57% of shooters will not make it past the 5-Count without tossing a (7), and therefore protects you from losing money on short rolls and Point 7-Outs when the table is choppy or cold.

While there is some merit to their conclusions when you look at ‘mean distributions’ of dice rolls, keep in mind that regardless of whether it is the shooter’s 3rd roll or 23rd roll, they still have a ‘1 in 6’ chance of tossing a (7).

What the strategy does do, is keep you, and your bankroll, longer by not losing money on ‘short roll’ random rollers, and hopefully you’ll still be at the table when the shooter or table heats up.

Keep in mind that no strategy or system can change the house edge (casino advantage) of any bet at the craps tables, the 5-Count Strategy can help you and your bankroll play and stay at the tables longer.

HOW THE 5 COUNT STRATEGY WORKS

When a new shooter takes the dice…

  • Count 1 starts when the shooter throws their first ‘box number’ (4, 5, 6, 8, 9 or 10). Any other number thrown (2, 3, 11, 12) does not start the count.
  • Counts 2, 3 and 4 include any number thrown, including craps numbers.
  • Count 5 requires a ‘box number’ to be thrown again (4, 5, 6, 8, 9 or 10) to qualify.
  • Anytime a 7 is thrown, the count starts over.

Let’s take a look at the rolls and count in action;

  • Shooter gets the dice and starts his/her rolls.
    • ( 3 ) Count = 0– The count doesn’t start until a box number is hit
    • (11) Count = 0– The count doesn’t start until a box number is hit
    • ( 6 ) Count = 1– A box number was hit so the count starts
    • ( 9 ) Count = 2– Any number rolled advances the count on counts 2, 3 and 4
    • (12) Count = 3– Any number rolled advances the count
    • ( 5 ) Count = 4– Any number rolled advances the count
    • ( 3 ) Count = 4– Count #5 requires a box number to be hit
    • (11) Count = 4– Count #5 requires a box number to be hit
    • ( 9 ) Count = 5– Required box number was hit
  • Now you start betting on the shooter. Use the betting system or strategy you’re comfortable with.
  • Remember that a (7) rolled at any point during the count would have started the count over again.

There is still a lot of debate as to whether or not this strategy works, but it will keep you at the table longer and increase your chance of being at the table when a hot or advantage shooter gets the dice or the table turns heats up.

Like any strategy, it’s recommended that you practice and experiment with it before ever putting real money on the craps tables.

BEST OF LUCK AT THE CASINOS!!!

Can setting the dice and throwing them under control really affect the outcome of a craps game? Obviously, no one can control the outcome of the dice on every single roll. Even a Major League pitcher can't throw a perfect curve ball every time. However, they can throw that old curveball on a regular basis.

The question is, can the dice be manipulated and thrown in a certain manner to produce a regularly controlled throw? Some once-skeptical researchers are conceding that more testing is needed. For new dice players, just rolling the dice can be a bit daunting, but once you get the hang of it, it's easy. By throwing the dice in the same manner, each time, some shooters get into a rhythm that produces monstrous rolls.

The Sevens to Rolls Ratio

There are 36 combinations that can be made from of a pair of dice and six ways to attain a seven. This means that, with a random roll, the mathematical probability of a seven appearing will be once in every six rolls, which is a 'Sevens to Rolls Ratio (SRR)' of 6. The house edge is calculated with this ratio.

If you throw the dice 42 times and roll seven 7's, you have a Sevens to Rolls Ratio of 6 (42/7 = 6). If, however, you have one non-random roll and throw seven 7s in 43 rolls, you have an SRR of 6.14. This is enough to negate the house edge on the 6 and 8 place bets. Just one controlled throw out of every 43 rolls of the dice would eliminate the house edge and yield a break-even game.

How to Control the Dice

Controlled throwing consists of several components. How you set the dice can affect their outcome. One of the most popular sets is the 3-Vm where you have threes in a 'V' formation. This gives you the hard six (3 and 3) on top, the six, (5 and 1) on the front, the eight on one (6 and 2) on the back and the Hard eight (4 and 4) on the bottom. There are no sevens showing on the dice with this set.

After setting the dice you must use a smooth delivery that is strong enough to get the dice to the end of the table but without too much force that will cause them to bounce hard against the back of the table. You also want to make sure that you follow through with your throw. You want to practice so you are throwing the dice the same way each time. Your goal is to throw numbers while avoiding the seven. Throwing the same way can produce repeating numbers.

The controlled throwing of dice is a physical skill which requires hours of practice to master. It is not easy and some players never master it. Perfecting a controlled throw is not enough to guarantee regular wins at the craps table. You will also need to learn how to bet properly to take advantage of your edge.
